An Old Tradition
England is not a very big country but it has a long and interesting history and a lot of unusual traditions. Some of them are very old, some are not. Some traditions you can find in many countries of Europe. For example, people celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December in France and Germany, in Spain and Italy, in Finland and Norway. They celebrate Christmas in Great Britain too. Those who live in London usually come to Trafalgar Square on Christmas night. There they can see the traditional present from Norway – the Christmas tree with 500 white lights. The tree looks very beautiful. You can hear nice music and Christmas songs too. Happy people walk and dance in the square waiting for the clock to strike midnight. Some families come to the square with their children. At midnight you can hear the greeting “Merry Christmas!” everywhere.

The Nice cup of Tea
Tea is traditional national drink in Britain. British people drink a lot of tea. They may have it for breakfast, but afternoon tea is popular as well. If people have a problem, they try to find an answer having a nice hot cup of tea. They say British people drink about 25 million cups of tea in offices, shops and restaurants and many more at home.
Tea appeared in Europe in 1610. It came from China. Not many people could buy it then because they were not rich. But in the middle of 18th century tea drinking became very popular in England. And soon the tradition of taking afternoon tea at home or in a tea shop began. People usually drink afternoon tea at 5 o’clock and have small sandwiches or small cakes. Tea shops became very popular with women because they could go there alone to meet friends.
Now they bring tea to Britain from India, Africa as well as from China. Today there are more than 1500 different kinds of tea in Britain: Assam, Earl Grey, Darjeeling, English Breakfast and English Afternoon. They all have different tastes.

Mother’s Day in Britain
In Britain they celebrate Mother’s Day in spring. The tradition started in the 16th century. They say that the custom began as a church festival when people visited their mother churches. Later in the 18th and 19th centuries a lot of people went away from home to work in the new cities and towns and didn’t see much of their mothers. On Mother’s Day everybody could go home to visit their families. There was a tradition to bring home a basket of tasty food, for example fruit cake and other nice things.
Now people send special greeting cards to their mothers. Very often families come together and take their mother out for dinner in a restaurant. Children usually buy chocolate and flowers for their mothers too. Young children often prepare their mother breakfast in bed, and the mother must eat it even if the porridge and tea are cold.
